Adult ADHD Treatment
A diagnosis is only the beginning. Treatment at the Institute is individualized, evidence-based, and built around the specific challenges and goals of each patient — not a generic protocol.
How treatment works
Treatment at the Institute draws on the strongest evidence base for adult ADHD — cognitive-behavioral approaches, executive function training, and targeted support for the conditions that most commonly accompany ADHD in adults.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)
CBT adapted for ADHD targets the thought patterns and behavioral habits that develop over years of struggling with attention and executive function — including avoidance, perfectionism, and negative self-talk.
Executive function training
Structured skill-building in planning, prioritization, time management, task initiation, and follow-through. These are the specific areas where ADHD most disrupts adult functioning.
Emotional regulation
Adults with ADHD frequently experience intense frustration, shame, and emotional reactivity. Treatment addresses these patterns directly, building the capacity to respond rather than react.
Co-occurring condition support
Anxiety and depression commonly accompany ADHD in adults. Dr. Volpe addresses these conditions as part of an integrated treatment plan rather than treating them in isolation.
A specialized approach
Executive Function Therapy
For many adults with ADHD, the most disabling challenges aren't attention itself — they're the executive function deficits that affect planning, time management, task initiation, and follow-through. Dr. Volpe offers dedicated Executive Function Therapy to target these skills directly.

Common questions
Do I need a diagnosis before starting treatment?
Not necessarily. If you have already been evaluated and diagnosed elsewhere, Dr. Volpe can work with that existing diagnosis. If you are unsure whether you have ADHD, a comprehensive evaluation can clarify the picture before treatment begins. Many patients start with an assessment and move directly into treatment.
What does ADHD treatment actually involve?
Treatment at the Institute is primarily psychotherapy-based, drawing on cognitive-behavioral approaches and executive function training. Sessions focus on building practical skills — planning, time management, follow-through, emotional regulation — while also addressing the patterns of thinking and behavior that ADHD creates over time. Dr. Volpe does not prescribe medication but can coordinate with your prescribing provider.
How is this different from general therapy?
General therapy addresses a wide range of concerns. Treatment at the Institute is specifically designed for adults with ADHD — the techniques, the pacing, the structure of sessions, and the goals are all shaped by how ADHD affects adult functioning. Dr. Volpe brings 30+ years of specialized experience to every case.
Is treatment available via telehealth?
Yes. Sessions are available via telehealth throughout Long Island and New York State. Telehealth has been shown to be equally effective for ADHD treatment and allows for greater scheduling flexibility.
How long does treatment typically last?
Treatment length varies depending on your goals, the severity of your challenges, and how quickly you build and consolidate new skills. Some patients benefit from a focused short-term course; others find ongoing support valuable as their circumstances change. Dr. Volpe reviews progress regularly and adjusts the plan accordingly.
